Castelnau-Camblong is sort of an outer suburb of France’s first fortified town, Navarrenx. The town, quite remarkably, still sits within it original fortifications and so is quite small, just a few streets wide and a few long. Like a number of the villages we have visited, Navarrenx is one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France.

After a morning at our accommodation we went into Navarrenx for lunch and a look around before heading back to Castetnau for a nap – the 150+ km over the last six days has zapped us a bit! Like Gers, the region claims d’Artagnan and Henry IV of France as favourite sons, with Henry IV’s mother, Jeanne d’Albret, the last ruler of the kingdom of Navarre, having lived in the town.

From our accommodation, we can clearly see the Pyrénées, I think in the direction we’ll head over the next three days as we head towards St-Jean-Pied-de-Port!
