Day 15 – Castrillo del Val to Burgos

Interesting walk today!

After a less than satisfactory experience at the very average but conveniently located Hotel Camino de Santiago, we set off in quite cool and breezy conditions on a great path towards the town of Castanares, about 5km from the hotel.

We had a bit of a tricky time getting from the N-120 to the south side of rió Arlanzon, where a nicer alternative to the Camino proper took us along increasingly better paths along the river for about 6km before we turned into Burgos and our hotel.

We arrived very early and took the opportunity to visit that Museo de la Evolución Humana, which provides a very informative interpretation of the fossils and other artifacts found at Atapuerca before a very nice lunch in the old town.

12km today and now 279km in total and our route today here.

We have two nights in Burgos so we can have more of a look around tomorrow and also do a bit of planning for the Meseta, the remote, high altitude plain that stretches for about 200kms from Burgos to slightly past León!

Heading off, initially through the new suburb in Castrillo del Val
and now on the very good path alongside the N-120 towards Canazares
The bridge over rió Arlanzon, having wended our way through Canazares
Heading towards Burgos
… and now on an even better path
The bridge back over the rió Arlanzon – it was quite surreal in that we had little to now view of the city while walking along the river then, bang, right in the thick of a quite large, busy city
Checking into our hotel – about five or ten minutes from the old town but very nice 😊
