Day 16 – Burgos to Hornillos del Camino

Another great days walking after a very refreshing stopover in Burgos. The season is changing, with much cooler mornings, still mid 20s in the afternoon and the autumn leaves starting to colour and drop.

Our hotel in Burgos was out of town, so we retraced the path we had taken quite a few times during our stay into the old town tben up past the cathedral before dropping down and crossing rió Alanzon for the third and second last time!

Its a beautiful walk out of town through the Parque Parral and out the gates, as per a acene from The Way. The movie gives the impression that that’s the end if Burgos, but the university sits on this side of town and we had another km or so before we were back in the countryside.

We walked in the shade of poplar trees for a few more kms, with a break in the shade for Al to reset her shoes and put a couple if plasters in one blister (the rest are now plaster free!). From there it was out into the sun first to Tardajos (where we had lunch, having first crossed rió Alanzon for the last time) and then Rabé de las Calzados.

From Rabé we climbed from about 800m of elevation up to the meseta at 950m. This will be our lot for the next several days – walking at about 900 or 950m then dropping down to towns in river valleys at around 800m and either walking in the valley or climbing again to the meseta.

Today we found some shade about 6km from our destination for the day, where we stopped for our final break before the descent into Hornillos and a well earned beer before being driven to our accommodation about 3km away in a small town called Isar.

23km today and now 302km in total – route video here.
