Day 20 – Carrión de los Condes to Calzadilla de la Cueza

Probably the first thing to say about today is that it takes longer to say the name of the town we are staying in that it is likely to take to walk through it – population 60 with a similar number of guests in the albergue and hostal, where we are staying.

Our stay in Carrión and the monastery was very nice, and we managed to get a look around the museum part of it including the original church and its beautiful retablo. We once again had dinner with Eddie and Hernan and it is good to hear different perspectives of the same walk!

Today was very cool to begin with, even though we got away lateish, but ended up probably the best walking conditions so far. More of the same forecast. Our walk was essentially leave Carrión, walk a bit over 16km down an old Roman road with new gravel on top and little to interrupt the walk, and stop at the next village. Which we did!I

t was nice to get in early, have lunch and a few drinks with some of our fellow walkers. It was also nice to see some head off to the next village! Most of us are walking to Santiago, we had a couple pass us a few days ago that were dragging their poles to Santiago, but some are talking to Santiago and one such person we were keen to see head off!

I’m rounding up to 17km today bringing the total to 376. We will pass the halfway point tomorrow both in distance and days! Route video here!

A chilly start but wonderful conditions for walking
Leaving the monastery a bit later than usual – we are getting away too early for the distances we ar walking!
Alongside a minor road heading out of Carrión
A km or two into the old Roman road
An unexpected but welcome stop just before halfway. We would have stayed longer but the excessively loquacious walker at a nearby table wouldn’t stop!
Still going straight ….
Another welcome stop…
… and finally the small village of Calzadilla de la Cueza

Lunch not far away😀
