One of the great things about planning and then doing a long distance walk is that you see the names of and read about the towns you will pass through or stay in and then, slowly, they become real. The road into Sahagún wasn’t all that attractive, and we did not go into the town last night because we were both a bit tired.
So, this morning, we discovered the lovely town of Sahagún: 4 historical churches, 3 monasteries and one friary plus a lovely Plaza Mayor.
It seems to have been right at the centre of the conflict between moors and christians on the Iberian peninsula and that has left its mark in terms of architecture and history.
It has now positioned itself as the halfway mark on the Camino Frances and you can get a certificate at the Santuario de la Peregrina for reaching that milestone (which we got!). For us it is halfway in walking days (21 done, 21 to go, although we’ve decided to bus one of those heading into León), rest stops (3 done, doing 1 now and 3 to go) and even travel dates (left on August 27, return on October 25 and today is September 25)!
