Triacastela was a very nice stop – we stayed at a place called Complexo Jacobeo, which seemed to be a whole of town affair. Part of the complex was an albergue, part was private rooms and our accommodation was a very nice new apartment! The final part of the complex was the restaurant (just outside our window) where the whole town seemed to congregate for drinks, then dinner and then breakfast! Breakfast was served from 6am, so the early starters had well and truly left by the time we ate and we had the place, and subsequently the trail, more or less to ourselves.

Did anyone say the mountains were behind us? After a very nice first km or so we headed up, and up, and up, until we capped out at about 900m after around 5km. The villages we passed today seemed almost deserted except for the livestock and I wonder whether the farmers have moved to larger towns and return each day to tend the animals, leaving the farmhouses to become derelict?

From today’s peak we descended steeply at first and then more slowly as we approached Sarria. We had a quick coffee after 10km at Furelia, after which there was little in the way of facilities until the outskirts of Sarria, where we had a lovely lunch and a bottle of wine!

18km today to bring us to a total of 638km this trip. We have a rest day tomorrow and then we head into the last 100km. Sarria is by far the most popular starting point for the Camino, so it will be very different from the 1376km we have walked from Le Puy!

Todays video is here.

It was a very cool start but this valley lulled us into a false expectation of the day before a big uphill
