Alison and I had planned to continue our adventures walking in Europe along the trails that make the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, this time the Senda Litoral along the Portuguese and Spanish coasts. The COVID-19 pandemic threw a spanner in the wheels and we finally canceled our holiday a couple of months ago.

I’m not sure when the plan emerged – probably over a glass of wine or two – but with Western Australia’s border firmly closed we started to think of local walks. We had done the Cape-to-Cape in 2014 and didn’t really want to repeat that so we started looking at the Bibbulmun Track, a 1000km walk from Kalamunda near Perth to Albany on the southern coast of WA. We don’t plan to do it all in one go: the distance doesn’t worry us too much but, unlike the walks we’ve done in Europe, we won’t be walking into a town every night. Some sections we can do as day trips, returning to a nearby town overnight, but some we can’t and may have to spend up to three or more nights camping in in the bush.

The track has huts and designated campsites but its still a bit daunting to have to carry enough food (not to mention the drink) and go without showers for that long. We will probably not do the track completely in sequence, and may not make the entire track but here goes!
