A bit of a funny night last night – our hotel was a quite nice Casa Rural, which usually do a communal dinner, but most guests (including us) were sent a km or so to the other end of the village for their dinner. A bit tone deaf for a hotel catering to walkers!

Most of the people in the casa were either in St. Jean or Roncesvalles at the same time as us and just about everyone was starting to feel sore and a few dropping out for a day or two to recover. Lucky for us we have a break in Pamplona!

Today’s journey started by re-crossing the bridge over the rio Arga and heading roughly west. The pathways were a mix of minor (and short distances on major) roads, sealed paths, grass (mud) and rocky trails as we followed the Rio Arga through small towns, including Larrasoaña where we took a break, before stopping at Zurián for an early lunch. It seems Monday is a rest day for restaurants and bars so not much open.

We made good time up to Zuriáin with lots of towns to pass but after lunch the heat and sore legs made things a bit of a drudge, although we were still moving pretty well.

We left the rio Arga to pass north of a hill to join the rio Ultzama on the outskirts of Pamplona. It can be painful walking into large towns and 5 of our 22kms today were through Pamplona. That said, we took an alternative route along the rivers which was a bit longer but very pleasant.

As usual for cathedral towns, a short uphill to the cathedral and our hotel. Looking forward to some pinchos tonight and a day off tomorrow!

22km today for a total of 73km in total! Check out the route here.

Our accommodation in Zubiri
Crossing the bridge over rio Arga. We think this featured in the movie “The Way”.
Magnesium Plant just west of Zubiri
Looking west just before Larrasoaña
On the bridge into Larrasoaña
Coming down a steep descent before Zuriáin
Lunch at La Parada in Zuriáin
Looking back east after climbing away fro rio Arga towards rio Ultzama
We though this was Pamplona but it’s about 6km in the opposite direction!
Puente de Arre, where the camino crosses rio Ultzama and heads toward Pamplona. We stayed left and followed the river through a park before re-joining the Camino about 4km later
Puente de Magdelena XII, where the camino enters the old town of Pamplona.
