Today has been our shortest since leaving Roncesvalles 5 walking days ago. Our over night accommodation was fantastic – great hospitality and wonderful home cooked food for both dinner and breakfast.
Europe is on summer time until late October so, while the nights are light until late, the sun doesn’t rise until after 7:30am, soon to be closer to 8am. This makes for great walking in the cool mornings but we are in a bit of a mini heatwave (low 30s in the afternoon) so the afternoons get a bit harder.
The first 7km or so we’re very similar to yesterday – nice flat tracks along the valley heading towards the twin towns of Sansol and Torres del Rio. Both are mediaeval towns separated by rió Linares, so after the flat walking we climbed up to Sansol, down to the river and up to Torres del Rio, where we had a short break.
More alternating ascents and descents for the next 3kms or so until we reached todays peak and crossed into the next valley. Once again, we descended to the next river, rió Cornava, close to which we had another break at casita Lucia.
Another few ups and downs and one final ascent put us into Viana and, guess what? It’s festival time! We could have guessed because both Luquin (yesterday) and Torres del Rio we’re both in the middle of multi-day festivals, which generally finish at 4 or 5 in the morning. Lucky for us we have a very quiet room and don’t have far to go tomorrow.
19kms today for a total of 161km so far – see the route here.
