A very short walk today, only 12kms, which suits us just fine. We were used to doing high 20km/low 30km on both the Camino del Norte and the Via Podiensis but teens or low 20s seems to suit better now!
We set off expecting rain mid-afternoon but got a heavy drizzle on the outskirts of Belorado (which was another lovely rural village), so on with the ponchos for about 1/2 hr before the rain cleared. Beautiful conditions again for walking as we passed through Tosantos but heavy drizzle again saw us pull into a heavily advertised bar in Villambistia that was … closed! We waited out the shower under shelter of the closed bar and then had the ponchos on and off again before finally finding a bar/cafe open in Espinosa del Camino.
I’m not sure what the collective noun is for a group of North Americans who think countries outside of North America should be just like North America but we ran into one of them in Espinosa, having waited until they passed us in Villambistia!
After low cloud/mist/rain most of the morning, the sun came out on our way into Villafranca, which is yet another stunning village, in this case in the valley created by the rió Oca. Getting in early has many benefits, not least of which is the chance to have lunch and a few drinks while waiting for our room, which is very nice!
We climbed from about 770m to about 950m today and are in the foothills of the Montes de Oca. Tomorrow we climb over at about 1100m and then start the descent into Burgos and the meseta!
12kms today, 248 in total and about 1/3 of the way. The route video is here.
