Day 22 – Sahagún to El Burgo Ranero

Another beautiful day’s walk! We had a nice walk out of town with what seemed like a lot of other walkers.

For some reason the section we are walking on today is called the Real Camino Francés, with a variant called the Calzada Romana between Sahagún and the next town we stay at, Mansilla de las Mulas. The variant looked more attractive but we found the path today very enjoyable with shade and good conditions alongside a vey minor road.

The shade started with trees just past the Puente Canto known as the copse of Charlemagne‘s lances – legend has it that Charlemagne’s troops buried their lances and they turned into the copse of poplars!

Anyway, a straightforward walk today – 10.1km to Bercianos del Real Camino, a coffee and a snack there, then 7.5km to El Burgo, lunch on the main drag and then find our accommodation – a bit basic but all good.

18km by the time we found our hotel, 425km so far and our route here.

Domus Viatorus – really enjoyed our stay there!
Heading through Sahagún with slightly overcast
Puente Canto, on the outskirts of Sahagún
The road out of town
The copse of Charlemagne’s lances
Just past where the Camino splits, to meet up again in Mansilla de las Mulas
The ermita de Nuestra Senhora de Perales, just before Bercianos
Cafe/Bar Santa Clara
We had shade almost the whole way – we saw maybe four cars on the road, which Al preferred over the gravel path
El Burgo – probably the flattest and least interesting town so far!
A beautiful ensalada mixta at La Costa del Adobe
Our accommodation for the night.
Stork’s nests on the local church
Sunset from our room!
